If you cannot speak

If you call 999 from a mobile and cannot speak or make a noise, listen to the questions and press 55 when you are prompted. This lets the call handler know the call is real and that you need help.

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech impairment, you can register with the emergency SMS service by texting the word "register" to 999 and following the reply, so that you can text 999 in an emergency.

Scam calls and numbers

If a call claims to be from the police, your bank or a government body, hang up and call the organisation back on a number you have found yourself. Look an unknown number up on Who Called Me UK before you call back.
