Telephone Preference Service (TPS)
The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is the UK's free register for people who do not want to receive sales and marketing calls. Once your number is on it, UK companies are not allowed to make live sales calls to you unless you have said that you are happy to hear from them.
Number Finder is an independent site and is not part of the TPS. Registering is free and you do it yourself, so never pay anyone to register you.
How to register with the TPS
- Go to tpsonline.org.uk and fill in the registration form, or call the TPS on 0345 070 0707.
- Add every landline and mobile number you want protected.
- Wait up to 28 days for the registration to take full effect.
What the TPS does and does not stop
- It covers live sales and marketing calls from UK companies to landlines and mobiles.
- It does not stop scam calls. Scammers ignore the register, and many calls come from outside the UK.
- It does not cover market research or survey calls, or calls you have agreed to receive.
- It does not stop marketing texts or emails.
Still getting sales calls?
If you are registered and a company still calls you about sales, write down the number, the date and the company name and report it to the TPS. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), which enforces the rules.
Look the number up on Who Called Me UK and add a report so that other people can see which numbers are making these calls.
Beware of fake TPS calls
Be careful of anyone who phones or texts claiming to be the TPS and asks you for payment or bank details. Registering is free and you do it yourself. If you are unsure, hang up and use the contact details on the official TPS website.
